The Inspiring Journey of Sneha in Art and Tattooing

From as far back as I can remember, art has always been a part of my life, a soothing place in life’s chaos. And it all started with my mom. She wasn't just good at drawing; she was a strict mentor who pushed me to perfect every line and shade. My childhood was tough, but art, under her strict yet loving guidance, became my escape, my focus, my calm.

By the time I finished school, I was already deeply immersed in pencil portrait sketching, not as a profession, but as a hobby. My mom, a single parent, struggled to raise me alone. She instilled in me the importance of independence and the value of money. I dreamed of becoming an artist and pursuing fine art as a career, but my family advised against it. They feared I would end up as a teacher, trapped by the need for money, luck, and connections that seemed beyond my reach. So, reluctantly, I chose fashion design.

Yet, my passion for art persisted. While pursuing my fashion diploma, I started doing commissioned portrait sketches to earn some pocket money. It was during this period, in my 11th and 12th standards, that a chance encounter changed everything.

One day, as my mom and I strolled through the streets, we stumbled upon a tattoo parlor. Curious, she went in to inquire about getting a tattoo. That’s when it struck her, why not channel my artistic talent into tattooing? She remembered how I used to draw on her body with markers as a child. She believed I could break into this male-dominated industry and make female clients feel more comfortable. And so, with her unwavering support, I embarked on my journey into the world of tattoos.

In 2011, I enrolled in a local tattoo course and started freelancing while continuing my fashion studies. Freelancing allowed me to cover half of my college expenses, easing the financial burden on my mom. I eventually completed my 3-year diploma and embarked on a career in the fashion industry, yet I never let go of tattooing.

Everything changed in 2015. My mom spotted an ad for a workshop by Aliens Tattoo in the newspaper. We had no idea who they were, but she insisted I attend, despite our financial constraints. The workshop was a revelation. I met incredible tattoo artists and learned about the grandeur of Aliens Tattoo Studio in Mumbai and the world of tattoo art. My skills soared to new heights, and a new dream was born. I wanted to be a part of Aliens Tattoo.

After a few years of hard work and persistence, I finally applied and got selected. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. Joining Aliens Tattoo felt like coming home. They trained me rigorously, refining my skills to meet their high standards. The more I immersed myself in their world, the more I realized this was where I belonged. It wasn’t just about the art; it was the discipline, the passion, the relentless pursuit of excellence.

The team of professional tattoo artists and at Aliens became my second family. Their support, motivation, and teaching propelled me to new heights. I participated in conventions, showcased my talent on grand platforms, and even won awards. My in-laws also stood by me, making countless adjustments to support my journey.

Looking back, the path was never easy. As a woman in the tattoo industry, I faced skepticism and criticism. My family endured a lot, especially during my marriage prospects. Potential matches couldn’t accept tattooing as a legitimate profession for a woman. But my passion and determination never wavered.

Today, I am recognized as one of India’s leading female tattoo artists, known for my versatile work. I have bagged several awards and gained a lot of recognition for my unique style and dedication to the craft. Being a tattoo artist has brought immense grace into my life. It has given me a strong sense of purpose and fulfilment. Through my art, I connect deeply with my clients, helping them express their stories, emotions, and identities. Each tattoo is a piece of my soul, a witness to my journey, and a gift to those who trust me with their skin.

Tattooing has not only provided me with a career but also a platform to inspire and be inspired. It has taught me patience, resilience, and the joy of continuous learning. The smile on a client's face, the tears of joy, and the sense of achievement after completing a piece are moments that I cherish deeply. This profession has truly fulfilled my purpose in life, allowing me to be an artist, a storyteller, and a healer.

Looking ahead, my aspirations are vast and vibrant. I aim to continue pushing the boundaries of my art, to evolve and innovate. I dream of working internationally, participating in global conventions, and winning more awards. I want to make my family, my in-laws, and Aliens Tattoo proud. I aspire to mentor young artists, especially women, encouraging them to break barriers and follow their passions. My ultimate goal is to leave a lasting legacy in the world of tattoo art, making a mark that inspires future generations.
